Is the hype around whole30 and keto legit?

As we enter into a new year, and resolutions around diet and weight loss become a focus of attention for many, we look for what is the most effective, easy to follow, and offers the quickest results.  Two diets that promise to be just that are Whole30 and Keto.  Their growing fame may have piqued your interest, but as we evaluate which diet makes the most sense for us, we also need to decide if it is something we can adhere to long term.
Whole30 and Keto both promote a healthy way of living and produce short-term and long-term benefits. We love that both programs promote “smart” and “intuitive” eating, and that each of them encourages us to make healthier food choices.

Whole30 is about eliminating specific food groups (dairy, sugar, grains, legumes) for 30 days, which will in turn allow your body to “re-set” and heal itself from the inside out.  You fuel your body with whole foods, like fruits, nuts, meats, and vegetables, and not with processed foods, dairy, legumes, or sugar.  During the 30 days, your skin may clear up, your gut biomes are happier, which could influence your joint healthy, and less bloating. Many of us will determine that our digestive systems don’t like certain foods, but can better handle others.  For me personally, my body can’t tolerate sugar, grains, and legumes.

Keto is a high-fat, low-carb program that focuses primarily on sending your body into a state of ketosis, which will in turn allow your body to use stored fat as energy.  The process to get into ketosis can take up to two  weeks, in which you go through a bit of a flu-like state.  Once in ketosis, you have much more energy, focus, and little to no cravings.  Same as with Whole30, by eliminating specific craving-causing foods (sugar, grains, legumes), you will find that your energy levels are leveled, fewer crashing sugar levels in the afternoon, and your mind is much clearer.

At eat., we don’t believe one shoe fits all, nor do we support a quick-fix nutrition program.  We support long-term nutritional programs that are healthy, sustainable, and produce results.

What we love about nutrition is being aware that what we put in our mouths directly impacts how we feel, from energy and skin clarity, to functionality of our joints and muscles.  That is why we founded eat.  We believe that the core nutritional ideas of a low carb, low sugar, moderate protein, and healthy fats combined with one-on-one coaching strategies can keep our clients focused and provide them with the support and tools they need to be successful.

Blessings,
MacKenzie
